Advantages to Small Dog Breeds

By | September 21, 2014

A lot of pet owners think that small dog breeds are much better than larger ones. They loudly sing the praises of small dogs, whether it’s because they’re physically easier to handle, take up less space, or are just so doggone cute! I happen to agree, but it’s not because I dislike big dogs. I just feel that there are just so many reasons to love small and mixed dog breeds (especially my pomeranian husky pups!) that I would never want anything else.

  • Require Less Space: For those who live in apartments or small houses, small dogs are the perfect pets. They’ll fit easily just about anywhere, you only have to devote a relatively small area in a corner of your living space to your puppy, and you have a home for a dog who will fill your home with fun and excitement.
  • Easy to Care For: The bigger the dog is, the harder it usually becomes to care for. Most small dog breeds don’t eat much, can be bathed in a sink or bathtub if need be, and don’t take several hours to groom. This not only saves you money, but also saves you time which can be spent playing with your pet.
  • Enhances Owner’s Health: Several research studies have indicated that small dog owners who suffer from coronary disease are likely to live for a longer period of time, compared to those who do not have dogs who can curl up with them and help them feel better. Owning a small breed dog (particularly a pomsky, in my opinion!) isn’t just fun and rewarding, it can be beneficial to your health.
  • Playful and Elegant: Small dogs and big dogs behave differently in most cases. Both can be quite playful and loyal to their owner, but there are some cases when big dogs become aggressive, or even dangerous. This rarely happens with small dog breeds, particularly if you choose wisely. Many people also associate purebred small dogs with elegance and style, which is another reason they’ve found such favor with pet owners in recent years.
  • A Pomsky Doesn’t Come In “big”: Just my personal bias, of course, but I LOVE POMSKY PUPS! Of course, they’re not tiny once they’ve grown some, but they’re not overwhelmingly large – and they’re so incredibly cute!

Take The First Step

There are dozens of small dog breeds, even more if you include mixed dog breeds, available for immediate purchase or adoption. If you’ve never had one as a member of your family, you have no idea what you’re missing. If you have been planning to get a dog as a pet for yourself, then you are absolutely on the right track as researches have shown that having a pet is not only advantageous from the point of view of health but also your emotional quotient. It is scientifically proven that kids who grow up with pets tend to have better understanding of relationships and grow up to be sensitive human beings. Though the life of a dog is short, but still it gives you an experience of a lifetime due to the special bond of care and consideration that you will share with your pet.

How to choose the right dog for yourself?

Always remember that when you are choosing a dog, you need to be very careful because it is not an object or a thing. It is a living being that requires your lifelong commitment towards its upbringing and breeding. You can go for mixed dog breeds as they are gaining a lot of popularity nowadays. But before that do a lot of research to see if the mixed breed characteristics suit your lifestyle and space requirements. It should not happen that you were expecting your puppy to grow only to a certain size but it grows huge and now you are in a fix.

Why mixed dog breeds are better than purebreds?

Now you must be wondering what the differences between mixed dog breeds and purebreds are? Well, there are several points for you to ponder upon:

  • You can decide the type of variety you want when you go for a mixed breed. You can get a Cockeranian (mix between Cocker Spaniel and Pomeranian) or a Bassador (Mix between Basset Hound and Labrador retriever). In short, you can have the best of both worlds.
  • Usually, mixed dog breeds are free from inborn congenital disorders as the breeding eliminates the defective genes resulting in a much healthier and happier breed.
  • You can be sure of their size, their eating habits, their workout schedule, their grown pattern and even their behavior to some extent.
  • They happen to be comparatively reasonable than the purebreds.

However, you should always do thorough research and consult a lot of experts to know what your dog is capable of doing. Whatever dog you get will be your companion and so you need to be sure you get a dog only if you can support its lifestyle during its growing up stages. No matter what breed you get, how your dog behaves will depend upon how you raise it and what type of training you give.

There are some cons also when you consider mixed breeds as since they are a mix of two genes so you might be unsure of which breed characteristics are predominantly visible in it later on in their lives. Moreover, it is not always true that mixed breeds are free from all diseases as they might contract some later on.

If you want to know what unconditional love is, then you should certainly get a dog for yourself.
